Driver at large after fatal bike crash

Motorcyclist killed at S. Memphis site used for illegal drag racing

Police searched Sunday for a car driver who fled after a deadly collision with a motorcyclist on an industrial road sometimes used for illegal drag racing.

Walter Patrick McCarver, 24, died early Sunday when his Honda motorcycle, traveling by some estimates up to 100 mph, hit the side of a car that had turned in front of him on Riverport Road. The road is near the Allen Fossil Plant, a power-generating facility in Southwest Memphis.

Two other cyclists were able to avoid the 1987 Chrysler Fifth Avenue, but McCarver was trapped by a row of spectators' cars parked facing the street.

After the accident, the driver of the Chrysler attempted to remove his tags and fled on foot, said Maj. H.E. Sullivan of the traffic unit.

Angry spectators flipped the car on its side, Sullivan said.

The three cyclists were racing east on Riverport about 2:15 a.m. when the westbound car U-turned into the eastbound lanes, Sullivan said.

"Two of them evaded to the south," Sullivan said. "The third crashed into the side door."

Police had not located the driver by late Sunday. No charges had been filed, Sullivan said.

Tony Brocato and other witnesses said that the stretch of road was packed with young people and their cars early Sunday.

They said the driver of the Chrysler was spinning his car in the middle of the street just before the crash.

On weekend nights, they said, large crowds of young people gather, drink and sometimes fight.

They said the place was particularly congested and chaotic early Sunday.

Racing and gambling on races take place in two areas of Riverport, just south of Mallory and farther south near the steam plant, witnesses said. Police shut it down two years ago, but only temporarily.

When police come through, the crowd disperses but soon regroups, they said.

Friends of McCarver examined the skid marks and scrapes left by the motorcycle and the car, pointing to shattered automotive parts left from the crash.

"They need to stop all those young people from coming here," said Brocato, who used to race in Motocross competitions.

Brocato, 38, said he has lost six friends to crashes in the past few years. He and McCarver sometimes rode together.

McCarver "was a good person, laid-back . . . never started any trouble," Brocato said.

Totally agree. And Hallett isn't that far away either. Well worth the trip. There are no excuses on the track, so if you think you're all that bad, take it there, not the streets, then show what you've got.

You should know more than anyone how dangerous it is. Why not race in a controled environment?

That's kind of a piss poor mentality for someone who caused such a big wreck not long ago due to some poor decision making and total disregard for the advice of older/more experienced riders. Don't mean to pick on you, but you posted on a different thread yesterday "lesson learned" and it just doesn't sound like it to me.

Jack you are right about Hallett, its the $100+ to ride on the track that makes it a little too costly for some of us.

and if our push mountain ride didn't open some eyes around here something that happened in Memphis won't do it either.

as much as I don't like it Beau is right, people will do it just for the rush. after all nascar is dangerous and thousands of people go see the race and prob milions watch. the part that troubles me about Beau is that he is talking about getting an even bigger bike. could be a mistake or not. won't know till he gets back on and see him ride again. hopefuly at that time he will have some leather to help protect his new skin.

some street racing with bikes still occurs in branson, on highway 265 i think across the bridge, ive heard my buddy talk about busting a couple of groups of them... i agree with running them at mokan or rodgersville, because at least there, you have a bunch of people watching, and Its so much nicer to win in front of a crowd than just win and you and the other racer know it... haha not really, cause if you loose in front of a crowd then you just die a little inside

I am trying to get the city of Springfield involved in the meetings I have put on. "Race on the track, not on the street". If you ever see a billboard on HW60 East of town that has that logo, you will know we were successful.

I think part of the street racing mentality is the recognition of their skills. If you notice, a lot of street competitions, be it drag, HWY125, stunts, etc, they want to feel like people recognize their skillz and be competitive. You look at the track, and everyone around you wants to HELP you improve your skillz, you tend to eliminate the "I'm faster than you" mindset and replace it with "**** that was fun!" That is the comroderie (sp) I have seen at Hallett, and it is hard to understand until you have experience it. Am I wrong?

Here it is:
A witness to deadly drag racing crash says his life has changed since seeing a motorcyclist die in a weekend crash. Police are hoping the crash sends a message to others who take part in illegal drag races. Police finally caught the man who left the scene after the crash, but so far no charges have been filed. They say the crash happened because of illegal drag racing. What's left are skid marks and a haunting memory. Witness Matt Gould said, "I heard the motorcycle lock up the brakes and you heard that crash. It's a sound I can't get out of my head." Matt Gould was on Riverport Road early Sunday morning when Walter Patrick McCarver crashed his motorcycle. McCarver died in the crash. "That feeling, just standing there looking at that man laying on the ground, I had to come back and pay some respect. It's a life changing experience."

Police say McCarver was drag racing when he hit the side of a car that turned in front of him. "I don't want to ever have to witness something like that again." Gould says this crash ended his days of hanging out at the popular drag strip known as "the Gate." It's a secluded area of Riverport Road, a straight-away, no houses in sight, the perfect spot for illegal street racing. Sgt Vince Higgins, Memphis Police Dept. said, "We're fully aware of it and have been addressing it for a long time, since 1999." The police make routine patrols of the area which only temporarily stops the racers. "We run them off, they come back." Police say the man that was driving the car took off on foot after the crash. They have since found him and questioned him about the incident. At this time no charges have been filed.

I agree that your going to get better skills at the track or the drag strip because you've got it all to yourself. There are alot less complications be it rocks in a corner, cars, etc etc. you have a more controlled enviroment to work with and alot more people to help you, i hope to experience the Hallet track soon, but if not ill take my time not trying to die and doing incredibly stupid Sh*t
