View Full Version : Speed limiter
ZX10R

I have a 2006 ZX10r. The speed is limited to 189 mph. How do I remove/bypass this without damaging my bike?
My goal is to have a 200+ mph bike . Any other mods needed. Thanks

189 is not enough? Find some curves and have some real fun.

Oh ya, curves are a blast. But the 200 mph mark is only a mark that would be kool to reach on a closed track of coarse. Besides its only 11 more mph.;)

Are you sure it's limited to 189mph? Are there even any "stock" bikes out there that even have the power to run 200mph? What do the new Busa's run?

All Japanese manufactures have a gentlemans agreement to limit the top speed of their bikes to 300 KMH (186 MPH). Any new liter bike could hit at least mid 190's stock.

i know you can get a TRE (timing retard eliminator) that will also do away with the top speed limiter on suzuki's, not sure about kawi's

Yeah, just get you an aftermarket programmer. I think that would be the best way (other positives as well)

What "closed coarse track" are you thinking about running 200mph on?

If the limiter is actually limiting speed, and not just speedo travel (that's up for debate) then cheap electronics will bypass it.
I don't think the electronics are slowing you down, though, I think it's the Nitrogen, Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide.
Speedo's are notoriously optimistic, as much as 6%. So at 186 (indicated) you could be running as slow as 175-180. So, we're at least 20 mph away from your goal. Your bike should be putting 155-165 hp to the ground in stock trim. Now, to get to the goal. . .
WARNING: SCIENCE CONTENT!!
The power necessary to overcome wind resistance varies as the cube of the speed. So if we use the most optimistic numbers we can come up with. . .
You are reaching 185mph with 155hp, the highest speed and lowest hp reasonable to the situation, you will need 40 more hp (195hp total) to reach 200mph.
If we use more realistic numbers, say, you are reaching 181 with 160hp, then you are going to need 55 more hp to reach 200, for a total of 215 hp total. To the ground. Safely.
So, get yerself a MrTurbo kit or a big ole nitrous bottle or $5000 worth of engine work and hang on and hope she doesn't break and spit you off at 195mph.
Or just tell everybody it goes 200, most people won't know the difference and nobody will care.

I heard once you run 200 mph your penis grows 2 inches; 6 inches if you do it in shorts and sandals. :tstory
All joking aside do some research and see what it takes bikes at the salt flats (one of the few places you have the room to push those speeds) to reach 200mph (real speed not indicated) Also watch some videos of people crashing there at under 200 mph and see what happens.

Scott...I was thinking the same thing. It takes a ton of HP to push a bike that fast. And like you said.....the factory speedo's are way off.

"only 11 mph" is a bit like saying, "It runs 9.00 second quartes-miles as it sits, so an 8.00 is only one second away...."
Good luck in your quest. I've wanted to try it myself. After having been to the Bonneville salt flats (not during racing season), I will never understand how Pontiac justified naming a porker sedan after that......

Also, none of this takes into account the ZX10R's less than stellar aerodynamics. A higher coefficient of drag takes more HP, too.
The XB12R is regarded as an averagely aerodynamic bike. Yet in testing, they had a higher topspeed with no front (production) fairing.

Good point. Well have that being said, I'll just stick with making it sound better then. :rant CHEAPER TO.

A friend of mine, an ace motorcycle technician, was once asked by a customer how to make the customer's motorcycle faster (this was the then-new ZX12R).
His response?
Remove the brakes.
That has been my standard-issue answer ever since.
I'll tow you to the magical 200 mark on the girlfriends scoot for a nominal fee.

There is a saying in the aircraft business(that is a fact of physics)"the faster you go the harder it is to go faster".Jack Roush of Roush racing has done some aerodynamic studies of bikes and said it takes a 186 rw hp for a Haybusa to do 200. And that all depends on many varibles such as airdensity, relative humidity etc.

this is not necessarily true, you do not have to improve horsepower on the zx 10 to break 200 though that is the way i chose on my zx 14, if you simply lower the bike and do exaust/powercommander you should almost be there, granted the p/c /exaust will boost your power but the significant gain is in the weight loss and improved aerodynamics you will achieve, brock davidson broke 200 on a stock 14 simply by adding a his pipe and lowering the bike, the 14 obviously makes more power but is substantially heavier, i know , i own one. this would be the cheapest way to do it and you dont have to fry the top end of your motor with nos!If the limiter is actually limiting speed, and not just speedo travel (that's up for debate) then cheap electronics will bypass it.

Theoretically....weight will not affect top speed, only acceleration. No matter what...you need the HP to push all of that wind resistance. I've never heard about a dead stock ZX10 running anywhere close to 200mph.
