View Full Version : Heart Attack Serious
A friend of mine picked this up a while back.
It's been sold, it looked like a blast in its time.....

Old style mechanical alcohol injection...with a roots blower on it??
Looks like one heck of a ride! :D

Injection is injection whether electric, gear or belt driven.
Erroneous. Have you worked on any current FI systems, or even looked into how they work? Late model FI is a much different animal than an old mechanical injection setup.

Erroneous again. I have been around it plenty. And if you would notice, I said they were DIFFERENT animals. I made no claim as to which was better or worse. I kept that part to myself knowing you would react as you did.
On a separate note, does NHRA allow EFI in Funny Car and Top Fuel?

And as far as my age and me not knowing much... you are probably right. I love it when people suggest this solely because of my age. That is probably why cars/bikes/boats/computers/everything are all going faster than they did in your day. Maybe because some young guy like me questioned the way grandpa did it, and wondered if it could be better, instead of just jumping in line as grandpa suggested.

Drool, regardless of what the young pups think. I'd cream my jeans to own that. Mine isn't near that bad, BUT I'm workin on it.

Hey you young whippersnapper - the older we get, the faster we were!! :moped

Looks like a 4-71 Dyers copy of a Jimmy(GMC) huffer to me.
Injection is injection whether electric, gear or belt driven.
That particular fuel pump is a Enderle the same as used on sprint, drag cars(with smaller pills of course).
Looks like a Crower Glide slipper clutch.
What brand is the belt driven mag. Joe Hunt I presume, maybe Don Zig?
Thanks for sharing, not that its that old but would make one hell of a bracket bike today and would be a "gas" to pull the trigger on and run it out "the back door."
Thanks again
When is the last time a mechanical injection system changed it's own jets in order to compensate for altitude, air density, or air temp?
I know mechanial systems can make as much (or more) power as an electronic FI setup....but don't try to tell me that they are the SAME. They are not.

Gee that's a super-nice sled, there, UJM! I really like it. I wish I had a supercharger like that. It'd fit swell on my Neon.
What's the fuel consumption in a quarter mile on one of those?
I never got to ride it. I was so close to buying it, I think it went for either $4K or $6K, and it seemed like a bargain, but those tend to bite me back hard.......

You don't know me so how can you say that?
No they don't allow it in the pro classes. And it has nothing to do with your notion of EFI being better.
It can't pass enough fuel. 10+ gallons in 5 seconds, I doubt you could pour it on the ground that fast out of two 5 gallon buckets,I know I can't(I tried it several times with water).
One of the best Injector designer/builders in the world lives about 100 miles north of Springfield Mo. Phill McGee, DBA McGee Cams & Injection.
I appreciate your comments/replies.
But I'm sorry for you're sake if you think older and sometimes more experienced people are a bunch of old farts that don't keep up with the times.
Nothing much is faster today, its just more available to todays masses.
Been there done it.
Regards
You are right. I don't know you, so I should have said that I was trying to be careful what I said having a pretty good notion that SOMEONE would say what you did.
If they DON'T ALLOW it in the pro classes, then I guess that shows you why none of them use it. Pretty simple.
If you keep up with the times, then show me in the times where "nothing much is faster today...".

Yeah, or wheel speed/RPM, engine load, EGT, 02, etc.. This is a big reason, IMHO, that these electronics are not allowed. They can make the car go fast down the track EVERY time.
And IQ is saying the same as I did. I made no claim to final HP numbers, only that they aren't the SAME.

Yep! As for as HP number.....a great tune on a carb or mechanical FI motor will make as much or more HP and an EFI motor. BUT......the EFI setup will do more tunning on it's own.
If was going to build another motor....I would probably go with EFI for a street car.....just for streetability. For a drag car...I would go with mechanical FI.....cheap, and easy to tune.

Where do you think the technology thats used in todays world come from?
Sure didn't come from generation X & Y.
Never said I didn't know where it came from originally. But you only took it so far. Now we've taken it farther, although you don't admit it (nothing much is faster than it was before?).
I'm seeing that you apparently have some hard feelings for people that aren't 40+ yrs old. I am sorry you feel this way. Honestly there are some very bright and sharp people that appreciate how far things have come to this point, but also like to rethink things to push the limit. Please understand, in no way am I discrediting anything that was done by the people that are up there in years now. I am only saying that the same progression that you all were doing in your time continues today. And things DO continue to get faster, more drivable, etc.
Also, I realize the time may or may not be here now, but the day is coming when an electronic car will run faster. It is has a lot more upside as far as complete engine control as stated earlier.
Much credit to the baby boomers IMO, those were the hot rodding pioneers. The Edelbrock family, Smokey Yunick, Sox & Martin's crew, etc. etc. If it weren't for these types of pioneers, we wouldn't have the trickle down technology that have given us a resurgence in the modern muscle car realm. As far as modern fuel injection technology goes....credit the crafty Germans and Bosch/Mercedes/BMW.
I don't harbor any ill will towards my fellow man as long as they treat me the same.
This thread started with the OP's pictures and it brought memories from years past and I recognized many of the pieces and identified and described some of them and the OP hasn't questioned my replies because more than likely doesn't know much about the pieces and uses and has refrained from commenting or giving a rebuttal otherwise.
I've welded, fabricated, and machined those pieces for more than thirty five years.
Any person(regardless of age) is welcome in my shop, scooter rider or not as long as the crack of their ass isn't showing and they show a true interest for how things are made and the hows and why of what make things work.
Your comment about 40+ makes no sense, I have two daughters, one 30 the other 26, and both are married to real good guys the same age as them and we get along fine.
This has gotten way off topic and isn't fair to to the OP,if you want to keep it up take it to the Warroom or the BS forums.
I've enjoyed your contributions.
Question your replies? Not me, they were spot on. No need too.
That motorcycle was wild, it has a persona that grabbed you by the balls as soon as you walked into the room with it.
Not is a fruity way, either. That machine was and is a true widow maker, at least from my perspective.
When it sold, I had a deep sign of relief.......

Not to say ones right and one ain't, I'm being nuetral, but the Gens X and Y have done an awful lot with the sport compact cars. I'm a gen X'er and I didn't think anybody in my age group would do anything worthwhile, but they do go fast.

I used to haul cam blanks from Grand Rapids, MI to LA for Edelbrock - Vic and I got to be pretty good friends, he was always brainstorming about how to get more HP out of the CAT in my Peterbilt.........very, very cool guy.
