View Full Version : Talkbox Frequencies?
Does anyone know what frequencies talk boxes transmit on, or the megahertz band they are in? and, How many channels do they have?
It depends on what brand and model you have. Some are on the FRS (family radio service) frequencies (which includes some fo the the GMRS frequencies) and some are on the old 49 mhz band (the old cordless phone frequencies). GMRS is twice as powerful and you are required to have an FCC license to operate. Last I checked the group usually uses channel 12 code 12 on the FRS which is exactly 467.6625 MHz. :D FRS is usually .5 watts-1watt (2 miles line of sight) and has 22 channels and 38 codes. GMRS has 2 watts-5 watts (5 miles line of sight) and usually adds a few more channels. Some models have extensive code work so no one can listen in.

The FRS-X2 has 14 channels. I have them all listed at home, I will try to remember when I get home and post them up for you. Of course, each channel has like 38 talk groups with in it, so you may or may not be able to communicate with someone using the the talk groups. The Talk groups basically make it so that we don't hear all the other crap that is being broadcast on the same frequency that the channel we are on uses. When we first got them, we would be riding around and here radio traffic from Walmart and stuff, but we switch to a different talk group and don't get that anymore.
As far as distance, last spring, I was able to talk to Jason and Tammy as they crossed Division and I was on Battlefield. We have also had problems using them over and around some of the hills in AR.
Ok thanks guys, a friend of mine has two older communicators that I was going to try out but they are on the 49 mhz band, I didn't know if they would be to out dated or not. The good think about having two though is you can let who ever you ride with use one so you can atleast talk back and forth then.

Yeah, those 49mhz are out dated and not capable of communication with the ones the guys are using. Those 49 mhz are only good for about 300'.
Here is a guide, Craig, on the frequencies of the raidos we use.
In all actuallity, we should probably be using some other frequency than 12:12 because anyone who wants to get a GMRS radio isn't going to be able to use his extra power. Channels 8-14 are FRS frequencies and most radios automaticlly downgrade the their power to .5watts so they can be used on the FRS. I was thinking of getting a 4 watt GMRS radio but it really does me no good with the extra power.
What do you guys think about changing our channel and code to a higher one? Like 15:15?
