View Full Version : Fiddy plus legality?

So at wolfies I discussed fiddy legality briefly with someone. The jist of it was a fiddy was under 50cc and if properly lighted it could be street legal.

Thats cool and all, but what about the overbore fiddy's? Now that I'm playing with the idea of getting one, I'm thinking one of those 110cc pit bikes. I don't mind if it has to be registered/insured as a proper bike, but is there a way to get those on the road?

Based on my very limited riding experience with the fiddy and what I know about scooters (and no experience on one at all, well except maybe when I was an 8 yo visiting in Florida - I swear I've ridden a scooter SOMEWHERE :) ) - the problem with fiddy's is their seat height compared to scooters. As you know some cities have outlawed what they think are 'pocket bikes' and while they were aimed at the REALLY small bikes (even smaller than fiddys), the same problem still exists. No one on the street will see you or even know you're they're until they run over you, and even then they might not even stop. Even at 4 or 5 bucks a gallon there's still a million skyscraper-high SUV's out there being piloted by soccer moms on autopilot ;)

Scooters are a LITTLE better because of their extra height, and also as they're not quite so cramped they're more manueverable on the pavement, and they're usually designed to carry stuff too.

But believe me, I've had fiddys on the brain ever since this weekend too! :)

You can buy large CC cylinders for fiddy's that are still marked "49cc" on the cylinder. If a LEO were to question the size, you could always point them to that factory-cast displacement indicator.

Just saying...

on my "stocker" i just stamped 49 on the cylinder with a punch set. most aftermarket cylinders dont have the size stamped on them. a little bbq paint and you have to know what your looking at to know it aint stock.

Thats so awesome. Its not like I want to lane split Glenstone, but riding it to the corner store without hassle would be nice. Man wolfie's party was just a great big sales pitch to me. I gotta have one!!!

Legal or not....getting a 50 out on the rode and riding it around through traffic is just asking for trouble. They are so small, and so low to the ground.....you can't even see someone riding one if they are right next to you. And they barely have enough power to even get out of their own way. It's like riding around a loaf of bread with wheels.......who cares if it's legal, your going to get killed on it if someone changes lanes on you.

Common sense says leave the 50's at home.....take a real bike out on the streets. :(

i will eventually get plates on mine. bike already has wired stator, headlight brake/taillight, speedo and a horn. ive already checked and can get insurance. all thats left is an inspection and a trip to the dmv. really just lacking motivation at this time. nobody seems to street ride 50s anymore.

I thought the "legal" top speed on a 50cc for the street was something like 35 to 45 mph.

I think you're right. 49cc, "automatic" transmission, 35 mph, etc etc.

Licensing for a scooter or moped depends on whether the vehicle meets the definition of a motorized bicycle. The Missouri statute definition of a motorized bicycle is as follows:

"Any two-wheeled or three-wheeled device having an automatic transmission and a motor with a cylinder capacity of not more than fifty (50) cubic centimeters, which produces less than three (3) gross brake horsepower, and is capable of propelling the device at a maximum speed of not more than thirty (30) miles per hour on level ground."

A motorized bicycle does not have to be registered with the Missouri Department of Revenue. However, you must have a valid driver license (though no motorcycle endorsement is required).

Missouri statute does not require a helmet to be worn when operating a motorized bicycle. Please contact your local law enforcement agencies for any county/municipal codes that deal with helmets and motorized bicycles.

Keep in mind that no motorized bicycle may be operated on any public thoroughfare located within this state that has been designated as part of the federal interstate highway system.

Just remember once you receive a title on a vehicle or "title" a vehicle, your vehicle is then placed into the files of the county collector who will tax you on the vehicle for personal property tax and will continue to do that year after year until you transfer the title. That's one nice thing about a scooter, you don't have to title them with D.O.R. and there are many mods you can do on them to get well over 50 mph. This speed then can get you stopped for a violation, but just drive wisely in traffic and wear a helmet.

i already pay yearly taxes on it since i bought it new and actually payed the fee to have a title instead of an mso. i def have love for the scooters, i had an old gy6 powered honda scooter that could do just shy of 80mph. i shouldnt have sold it, now scooters are selling for unheard of prices.

true that!! I ride all over joplin with no problems because they are legal but in no way do i ride on main street or rangeline because of the idoits that are driving. Not just because they are small but heck people pull out in front of semi's or big trucks and say they didnt see them:eek: All side roads or back roads is what I like. I have crossed over those intersections just to get across the light though but stay off main roads and have fun

you can get around that. when your yearly renewal comes in the mail, don't
list it. then just show your tax receipt for your main vehicle or whatever, most
of the time they don't even look at your tax receipt. has worked many times
for me.

kinda hard to see from the side but it has an acerbis headlight and led tail/brake light under the tail. both are run off of a stock stator that i wrapped for lights, you can see the voltage regulator bolted to the frame right in the middle.

so this lil rocket is registered as a motorcycle, has its own electrical power too?

Don't suppose its for sale... actually i want to buy something similar, how tricky was the stator? And when you say stock, stock for what? Isn't this a chinese copy of a honda?

i never claimed it was stock, thats why im not even gonna try the 49cc gig. current motor is 88rh with lots of love, more to come. no chink for me, i bought this bike new in 06 from prosuckle. the stock stator has extra poles you wind with magnet wire to produce a separate lighting circuit. just add regulator for halogen light or regulator/rectifier for leds and your good to go.

how long did it take to wrap the wire? don't you have to have the same
amount of coils on each and reverse the wind on every other pole. i would
have bought one, but i guess that's why i'm broke all the time! ps bike looks
awesome.

thanks, directions say 60 turns per pole i got 75. thats about the most you can do before you start to have clearance issues. you do have to reverse after each pole. the wire is only $9 a pound, ive done three stators so far and still have some left. took about 30min or so with soldering.
