Not sure how many 1000RR owners are on here, but I thought I would share a cheap mod for them.

The standard throttle tube on the 1000RR is a "1/4 turn" tube, meaning you turn the tube approximately 90-degrees of rotation to go from idle to WOT. The Yamaha R6 '06 and newer come stock with a "1/6 turn" throttle, which reduces this rotation down to 60-degrees to go from idle to WOT. You can go WOT easier without putting your wrist at as odd an angle. The way it does this is simply by having a larger diameter at the throttle cable end, hence pulling faster on the cables as you rotate it.

HRC makes a full kit for this which includes the tube, new cables, etc. in the $150 price range, but the R6 tube will work with the stock cables and is less than $10.

I picked up the R6 throttle tube off of ebay for under $9.

It was a little tricky getting the Honda throttle tube off. The cables were tight, with no slack at all...even with the adjuster in as far as I could get it. I ended up deciding to just tear the bike down to the throttle bodies and do it right. I knew I was going to screw up the cables or break something trying to force it. I'm glad I did...it was a pain, but only took me about 30min to pull the tank cover off, air filter housing, and get down to the throttle cables at the throttle bodies.

(sorry for the crummy cell phone pics)

Once I got down to the throttle bodies, I loosened up the two throttle cables and that gave me plenty of slack to get the throttle tube off.

After that, I was able to table a dremel and grind off the bumps down inside the throttle tube housing. They are easy to see when you try to fit the R6 throttle tube into the house....they are easy to remove with a dremel. After that...it was just a matter of putting it all back together and getting everything adjusted.

All in all it took me about 1.5 hours....not that bad at all for this mod, especially at only $9 for the tube.

Now I just need to put some new grips on it and ride it

For a little more money, I recommend doing the expensive mod that involves replacing all Honda parts with Yamaha parts...aka buying a Yamaha! :D

I tried that mod once, but I think I screwed something up because I ended up with a Yamaha YFZ450 instead :D

i first read about this back in '06. i went another route, but essentially did close to the same thing on my zx10r.

this isnt a mod i would do for the type of roads we have around here...especailly on a literbike.

on tight and twisty roads, such as 125, throttle control is key.

like i said, i tried a 1/5 throttle mod, which is a longer throw than the 1/6 you did, and found it to tricky for for the twisties.

if youre at the skill level you require a mod like this, i would spend the coin and do it right with the hrc kit...and i dont think that applies to many on this forum.

My first thought was, "I probably don't have the throttle control for this mod."

+1..........on a liter bike, it could spell disaster on 125 to a newb-moderate enthusiast rider.

I agree...I would not do this to a bike that someone isn't used to riding.....

I kept the stock throttle tube just in case this one is too twitchy I can change it back, but from what I have heard this 1/6 throttle works great on the 1000RR’s since the power delivers is pretty smooth to begin with.

It was really simple to do…..if someone can’t do what I did, I don’t know how in the world they would ever install the HRC kit since that comes with all new cables that they have to change out also (so you pretty much have to tear the bike down just like I did). I haven’t rode the bike yet, but it sure doesn’t feel like it made a HUGE difference, but it’s definitely noticeable as far as how much twist I need to get to WOT. For $9….why not give it a shot, people have been doing it for years on bikes.

Snarky comment withheld.

Thanks for tip. This would really benefit the 1/4 mile types.

Well I got to ride the bike a little bit with the new throttle before it started raining. It's a tad more touchy on the throttle, but not bad at all. It took me about 5 min to get used to it. I like it....wish it came that way from the factory!! :D

I did it to my 750. It's much better than stock, and nowhere near a problem. I only wish I could afford one of the trick aftermarket throttles with adjustable cam lobes.
