Kidney Stones
Hey, after 8 days on insanity I figured I would throw this out there to see if anyone else has any experience w/ kidney stones.
This all started last Friday with my dad waking up and throwing up violently coupled with incredible pain. (the pain was causing the vomiting) So we went into the ER at McCune Brooks Hospital and spent about 8 hours in the ER room getting pumped full of pain medication and they took some X-rays, only to show that his Kidney stone was flaring up and causing all of this. (We knew about the stone, but didn't know when it would rear its ugly head. He had gone in about 8 months ago to get his stone in his other (right) Kidney passed, he did that one in the hospital. The Doc's noted the other kidney stone in his other kidney at that time, but said it would be a while before we had to deal with it.... well here we are lol.) So that night we went home and he did (relatively) alright for the next day/night, then it started getting crazy bad again and we went to Freeman and got admitted, spent about 8 hours in the admitting room with crazy pain and vomiting, just could sit still for a second. They pumped him full of all the pain meds, LOTS of morphine, LOTS of fentenal and several others. We finally got admitted to a room in General Surgery. Next morning at around 7am they took him in to do whats called a cytoscopy, that proved to be unsuccessful but they placed a stint on his ureter to ease the blockage pain. Same day at around 1pm we went over to freeman west to get a lithotripsy procedure done, that seemed to break it up, but that was several days back. I'm leaving several ER visits out of this to save room, but it kept getting bad then somewhat manageable, then bad..... etc.... We've had VERY little sleep, maybe 10-15 hours in the last 7-8 days... He is retaining A LOT of fluid, having EXTREME bladder spasms, inability to have a good bowl movement and that's causing a whole host of other problems. He hasn't passed anything as far as kidney stones go. Last time we went into the ER (he was running a fever of 101.4 and had gained 11lbs in the last few days, so that really concerned us as he hasn't eaten hardley anything. They said that they couldn't explain the swelling/water retention. They also ran blood tests and lots of lab work, bladder scans, x-rays etc.. Everything came back okay, no infections or anything. Sent us home. (can;t get admitted if you don't meet the criteria for insurance.) So we've just been wrestling with this pain and it's insane. I've gotten myself so out of wack from being with him 24/7 that I'm now starting to feel weird, diarrhea, I was damn near hallucinating last night, spots everywhere, the whole 9. So I (being healthy) can;t imagine what he is going through. We've tried fleet enemas to get some pressure off his intestines with little results. He's taking bladder spasm medication (Robinul) taking stool softener (colase) We're trying to keep away from the darvisets as they will further complicate the intestine problems. And there are a few other medications that I can't remember as they aren't right in front of me right now. I guess I was just curious if anyone else has had any experience with kidney stones.... And I think I needed to vent a bit, sorry for all the text. Well.... Any personal testimonies?

Not personally, but my best friend from "back home" suffered with them for a while. One of the toughest guys I know, and I saw him bawl like a baby. Dr's didn't do much for him other than pain meds and wait till it passed.
Best of luck, and props to you for hanging in there with your ol man.

Yeah, that's sounds about dead on with what I've been hearing for home remedies, only problem is we're WAY past that stage, the man's lucky if he can eat a spoon full of malto-meal and keep that down.... That acidity would probably do him in.... We're still hanging in there, and thanks for the words of encouragement!!!

On a side note, everyone we've talked to said this pain was worse than child birth, and I can totally believe it! One of the nurses at the hospital said that she had 3 children and she has also had a kidney stone (it's much easier for a woman to pass them I guess) but she said that she would rather have antoher three kids than have another kidney stone. crazy....

Been there done that many many times.
Sounds like they are doing everything to get it to pass. The stint helps with the pain but causes its own problems by being uncomfortable. My last stone came out as soon as they removed the stint(had it in for a week and begged them to take it out). My current MO for minor stones is to take a pain pill, drink lots of water and walk up and down the stairs until it passes. If I have sudden "major" stone I pop two pain pills and check myself in at the ER. Usually after 3 shots of morphine(I hate morphine, makes me dry heave) they peel me off the table and take x-rays, sometimes they do the lithotripsy, sometimes the stint, once they took a whole TV crew up my unit and shot at the stone with frickin laser beams. If the stint is still in and they broke the stones up with the lithotripsy they will probably come out when the stint is removed. Good Luck Call me if you have any other questions Shane 425-8046 daytime hours |

Shane!!! You DA MAN!!! Well for several reason, the main one being that it takes a strong man to tolerate that kind of pain!
Yeah that cytoscopy that I mentioned was actually the whole TV camera crew up the unit thing. They went in to try and grab it, were unable to get a hold of it and they tried to laser it out, still no success so only four hours after that procedure they put him in for the lithotripsy. Said they got it broken up. So really right now we're just dealing with the discomfort of the stint and also he NEARLY wound up with an entirely blocked colon. Did some serious enimas and that helped out a lot with that pain, comming back a little bit but I think we'll be alright. And reallllllly thanks for the number, I may have to take you up on that!!! It's nice hearing everyones experience with these bad mofo's!!

Going into day 10 here. If anyone reads this just say a little prayer for my dad to just get some sleep tonight. We'll get to speak with the urologist tomorrow morning. Just keep him in your thought and prayers if you will please.

Welllllll we wound up going to the Freeman ER at around 2am monday morning. Finally got in and they FINALLY took notice and said something was very wrong. He had either a tear in his ureter or all the back pressure may have put a little hole in his kidney or something along those lines. Whatever the case he had basically been urinating back into his body, mainly his abdonimal cavity. (That was the cause of the 12lb weight gain.) They got a cath in him and within the first hour he had filled about 3600 mililiters (I believe that's the proper unit of measurement, not sure) of urine in the cath bags. Insane amount!! But there was so much relief, no more having the sensation to urinate with no more than a dribble or two and then the crazy spasms. The bloating went down, still a little swelling, running a little fever, but they got him on antibiotics and some other good stuff and they are keeping him overnight in Gen. Surg. at Freeman, no procedures for tomorrow as far as I know. The doctor basically put in an order to leave him alone for the night and let him sleep as his body desperatly needs to recoup a bit before they do anything else like take the stint out. No sleep for 55 hours gets the body pretty down, but I'll be going back up there at around 6:15 tomorrow morning (tuesday) to see what the plans are and see how he is doing. It's really strange being away from him tonight as it's the first night in 10 days I wont be by his side.... Just a weird feeling. I know he is in good hands though...... We knew that there had to be something wrong, something more than just a kidney stone, and there was and now we don't feel so crazy and he is one TOUGH s.o.b.!!! Well I'll try and keep everyone posted up here. Just kinda helps me to decompress a bit I think. Thanks for humoring me everyone!!!!

As someone who knows a little bit about medicine, it sounds like his case was mismanaged, especially if he did actually perf his bladder.
Also, 3600 mL is an insane amount of urine, and with those volumes I wouldn't be surprised if he did indeed perf something. Did the physician mention hydro-nephrosis at all? Good luck with everything and I hope we gets to feeling better soon.

Hey Tempest. They havent mentioned anything about hydronephrosis yet, but that certainly sounds like what's been going on. As far as being mismanaged, I would have to agree there, but it's hard to say. I don't fell angry with anyone and there isnt any point in getting all bent out of shape, we are where we're at right now and I believe that we are on the road to recovery, especially now that they have identified the problem, have the cath in and he is in good hands. I'll be heading back up tomorrow around 6am so I'm sure I'll have more to tell tomorrow afternoon/evening. The urologist didn't seem to be super concerned and he didn't seem to want to do any surgery so that's good. He has the stint on the ureter and I assume that it will be comming out soon. Just praying and hoping for the best and most expedient recovery right now. But you know what they say. For every one day down it takes three to come back, so it will be a while before he's back to 100%, but I think we're on our way.
Thank you all for your concern and thank you all for all the information you have provided. I truely and greatly appricate it! Alright, time for some sleep. Good night!
